Headlines
We mentioned in our La Liga update earlier this week the racism on El Chiringuito (a Spanish TV show about football, you would have seen the guy on Twitter) from Pedro Bravo, president of the Association of Spanish Agents (not the guy below).
Well, it turns out that the show's producers tried to intimidate Vinicius into not posting his video denouncing the racism heâs received.
This is after Atletico Madrid put out a statement condemning their fans for the racist chants outside their stadium prior to the derby on the weekend.
Uefa confirmed yesterday that Russia will be out of Euro 2024 qualifying over the war with Ukraine. In other Russia related football news, Pjanic and Dzeko are refusing to play for their native Bosnia in a âfriendly against Russiaâ that has been naively scheduled for November.
Qatar World Cup
Whilst David Beckham twerks for Qatar, Germany has been the most vocal opponent of the World Cup being held in a country that currently has over 6500 deaths attributed to the tournament.Itâs not quite a complete rejection of the tournament but Hansi Flick has come out and said:
This follows Phillip Lahm boycotting the tournament completely citing that âhuman rights are more importantâ, insisting itâs âcrazyâ for a country with such a terrible human rights record to host the tournament.
Special shout out to our Philosopher King, Eric Cantona for refusing to watch the World Cup outright saying itâs ânot a real World Cupâ because of the countryâs human rights history.
The England team will make a superficial show of support wearing an anti-discrimination rainbow armband in Qatar. However, the FA are lobbying FIFA for an update on new legislation for migrant workers in Qatar and compensation for âany injury or death during constructionâ.
Bundesliga
The Bundesliga has gotten off to an unexpected start with FC Union Berlin leading the pack at this early stage of the season.
Last weekend was no different as they took another 3 pts from Wolfsburg. With the on-form strike partnership of Jordan Siebatcheu and Sheraldo Becker (see below as top goal scorer) and the best defensive record in the league so far, itâs going to at least be interesting to see how Bayern inevitably win the league.
Daniel Farke has returned to Bundesliga to manage Borussia Mönchengladbach. A 3-0 win against RB Liepzig and talks of a top 4 finish are a long way from the previous East-Anglian rollercoaster he faced at Norwich.
Having beaten Barcelona midweek, Bayern would have expected to get 3 points against Bavarian rivals FC Augsburg. However, FC Augsburg and Mergim Berisha had other ideas, with their twitter account winning the internet yesterday and putting the final nail in the coffin with thisâŠ
With Nagelsmann under pressure, and a certain Champions League winning German manager recently made available, thereâs talk of the Munich board eyeing up potential options if things donât improve quickly.
We mentioned Juventusâ woes earlier in the week and both them and Bayern will need to make some very big calls in the coming weeks before the European places start to become out of reach.
