Liverpool sign Cody Gakpo šŸ’°

After several welcome videos made by United fans, Gakpo officially signed for Liverpool late yesterday afternoon...

One of the main stars for the Netherlands at the World Cup was expected to sign for United following countless rumours over the last few weeks and the Dutch connection with Erik Ten Hag.

However, late yesterday afternoon, PSV confirmed that they had sold the 23-year-old to Liverpool for an initial price of Ā£37 million (rising to Ā£50m).

Hereā€™s the best write-ups on the web about the young forward:

The Coachesā€™ Voice have done an in-depth technical analysis of the inside forward/ left-winger.

Neel Sheelat from footballtransfers.com did an analysis on the player in October describing him as ā€˜more devastating than Haalandā€™.

Premier League

Boxing Day Results

Brentford, despite a great start, conceded two goals in the second half to give Spurs a point in West London. Spurs have now conceded the first goal in each of their last six Premier League matches (their longest run of conceding first in the competition since April 2014 under Tim Sherwood).

The Premier League Fantasy Football app hustled millions of players out of FPL points by claiming that Mitrovic was likely to be injured ahead of Fulhamā€™s game with Crystal Palace yesterday. He went on to get an assist and score 2.

Julen Lopetegui got his first win for Wolves with a goal 5-minutes deep into stoppage time leaving Lampardā€™s Everton hovering above the relegation zone.

Leicester defended like a team that had just let their previous Invincible and integral centre-back of a team that went on a 44-game unbeaten run turned assistant manager join Wigan last month, letting in 2 goals in 7 minutes. Newcastle further solidified their chances of top four with a comfortable victory against the previous top-6 wannabes. Almiron, with 9 goals in last 16 games, had 9 goals in the previous 110 before Howe showed up.

Southampton joined West Ham with their 4th loss in a row as Brighton beat them 3-1 to go up to 7th.

Liverpool made it 3 wins in 3 against Villa. For all his critics, Klopp described Nunez as ā€˜unstoppableā€™ despite the missed opportunities in front of goal. Worth remembering that Nunez scored twice in his last league game and 7 in his last 10 appearances.

Arsene Wenger returned to the Emirates, for the first time since he left his role at the club, to see Arsenal take a comfortable 3-points from West Ham despite giving away an early penalty. Mikel Arteta described Arsenalā€™s performance as ā€˜at the level that he [Wenger] deservesā€™.

Tonight's Games

Chelsea (9th) face Bournemouth (14th), the two latest clubs to have been taken over by American owners. Bournemouth joined Chelsea two weeks ago in becoming the 9th American owned Premier League club. Foley, owner of NHL ice hockey franchise the Vegas Golden Knights, has bought the club as part of a partnership and assumes the position of chairman.

Off the back of losing out on Cody Gakpo, Erik Ten Hag has backed Rashford to score 20 goals a season for the club (his previous best being 17). United (5th) take on Nottingham Forest (19th) in the evening fixture today. Kieran Maguire has estimated that Forest have missed out on Ā£10m as they were unable to find a shirt sponsor. Theyā€™ve now agreed to donate their sponsorship rights to UNHCR (the United Nations Refugee Agency).

Howard Webbs wants ex-pros to become referees

Howard Webb (recently appointed Head of Premier League Referees) has said he wants to ā€˜broaden the number of referees, including trying to attract more female officials and others from diverse backgroundsā€™.

In addition to that, he discussed the opportunity to bring in players from the Football League:

Webb used the example of Szymon Marciniak (who managed the World Cup final) and the Pole's playing background during the early part of his career as an example of the added value in bringing in referees with playing experience.
